But, it's hard for some people not to "act" all the time. Part of it is "show up and look good" because the special effects and story capture the audience. I think Milla Jovovich had quite a talent for making this genre of movies.

Perhaps he’s in awe of her capabilities? That’s the only gap with the movie in my opinion. At the start he’s probably fulfilling a primal desire because he’s on the phone to his friend about this “perfect fare that fell in his lap” but by the end it’s not been made clear why he loves her. The ONLY thing that makes no sense is why Korban is in love with this girl at all. Zorg shooting her in the vent is pretty much “evil is already here so why bother”. Then korban as the reluctant hero isn’t even sure why he’s still involved and then gets misguided by the opera singer who tells him he has to protect the supreme being, but then leeloo tells him it’s her job to protect him, so at this point the tripe is completely inverted.Īnd then at the end when korban tells her she needs to defend earth because love is important, isn’t because she’s naive to the concept, but rather it doesn’t equate to her when she’s only seen the destructive force already on earth. So she’s not innocent and is aware of her surroundings. Then when korban tries to kiss her, she knows what’s up and responds with pointing his gun at him. So already we’re seeing the trope be subverted. A lot of post war immigrants faced this challenge when they were put on boats to USA.
Imagine trying to ask for help in English when you’re in a country that doesn’t have English speakers. Then when she escapes and falls in the cab, she is linguistically challenged, not infantile. Supreme being is 1000 years old and presumably has developed knowledge of her world and that around her and may not have even been female at some point in time.Īnd then arrives on earth, where human (read American) custom is to be bashful and avert eyes when someone is nude (which to be fair is how she arrived given she was reconstructed in a pod). Having just watched the movie, I feel like this trope is both embraced and then subverted and lampshaded through out the movie.īut I also have to argue that the supreme being is not child like, but rather not versed in earth/human customs.
